Myopia Calculator

The Brien Holden Vision Institute Myopia Calculator is designed to bridge the gap between research data and the end user. The tool shows the various management options / scenarios and demonstrates the possible benefits, over time, of starting to treat myopia progression.

The Myopia Calculator is a tool that helps eye care practitioners, individuals, patients and parents to apply the research based evidence for various management options and enables the practitioner to demonstrate and discuss ‘risk versus benefit’ for individual cases.

The Myopia Calculator is used daily by thousands of eye care professionals worldwide as they strive to explain myopia progression to their patients.  It is the most widely used tool the Brien Holden Vision Institute has developed to date.

The Brien Holden Vision Institute requires users to complete a one-off registration to access the calculator.  This helps to better understand the number of users and to send out notifications and updates of the calculator or advances in myopia management research.

You can opt out of these notifications at any time and still continue to use the calculator but we hope you will be interested in receiving all the lastest information the Global Myopia Centre has to offer.

The Myopia Calculator is a free tool made available through the Global Myopia Centre, compliments of the Brien Holden Vision Institute.

The calculator is available in eight languages – English, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese, Spanish and Vietnamese.

You can now choose your preferred language and switch between languages at any time.  The latest version includes an ‘ethnicity’ option which allows the user to switch between Asian and Caucasian.

The Myopia Calculator can be used to estimate the annual progression of myopia, showing the approximate refractive error that will result with and without myopia management.  This is calculated using the patient’s:

  • Age
  • Refractive error at presentation
  • Ethnicity

The estimated annual progression is calculated using data from the Brien Holden Vision Institute database (for Asian ethnicities) and published meta-analysis (for Caucasian ethnicity).

The estimated annual progression is enveloped by a band (the 95% confidence interval) which means that an estimated observation using the data sets is likely to fall within that band with 95% probability. The band increases in width for longer durations as the confidence decreases with longer observation periods.

Using the “estimated annual progression without management” as a comparison, the calculator can be used to determine the extent to which the risk of annual progression can be reduced with a specific myopia control strategy.
